What is the significance of your life

Failure to be faithful to God sucks significance out of your life as surely as a fire pump drains a reservoir. The second impact is more serious still. Worshipping idols destroys life. Inevitably they prove to have offered a false hope that will leave you short and wondering how things could have gone so wrong. Many years ago, the man who led me to Christ planted a thought in my heart that has never left. If it falls to your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera.

Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: "Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well. If you are faithful to God, your life will be filled with his grace and glory. It will be filled with grace because it will have been a life transformed by God's love and power.

It will be filled with glory because the imprint of his purpose will be unfading and everlasting. It will be filled with joy because the greatest joy comes from serving him in his strength.

Handwritten cards are better! In the car, walking between meetings or in the few moments of silence in my day, I try to think of those who have made it possible for me to do what I do: my family, my clients, my co-workers and everyone else who is special to me.

This goes hand in hand with remembering who got you where you are. No one has reached their current level of success alone. Others have helped us, whether it was a friendly word, writing a testimonial, or referring us to someone we needed to meet. Gifts need not be expensive. To the ones who receive our particular expression of God, the effects can be life changing. Culture has handed us a skewed understanding of significance.

It has trained us to expect drama, shooting stars, and Technicolor rainbows any time something extraordinary happens. It is easy to miss the real miracles that take place in life each day because we are looking for the dramatic and obvious. Never underestimate the power of a simple act of kindness or an encouraging word.

I believed only the obviously significant ones made a difference. That same man today has literally changed the world, not with drama and theatrics, but with subtle power, humility, and obedience. Miraculously conceived, He was born into obscurity. And the least significant people of all—the shepherds in the field tending the stinky dirty sheep—were given a birth announcement.

Born to two outwardly normal young people, nobody saw the true origins of Jesus, conceived in a virgin by the Holy Spirit. That extraordinary miracle took place in a private setting without any fanfare whatsoever. It just was. Its existence was significant but not obvious.
